Thanks to the excellent arrangements made by Fiona Davies we have recently enjoyed our first tour with the Polar Bears section of the Sporting Bears. Our base was at Contin, about 13 miles north of Inverness. Twelve cars took part following routes on Saturday and Sunday which covered some spectacular parts of the Highlands. We and our friends in another MGB from south of the Border were determined to complete the whole itinerary, (despite being considered goody-two-shoes and despite only having minutes to change each evening before the gourmet dinners provided at the Coul House Hotel). Our efforts were however well rewarded with fantastic scenery and some very interesting stops. |

| Possibly due to the fact that the weekend was arranged by Fiona, there were plenty of opportunities for the co-drivers to do some shopping so it was a very successful balance of enjoying the cars on the open roads, some retail therapy and wonderful meals. |

The visit to the motor museum at Elgin was fascinating even to an uninitiated admirer of classics and the guided tour round Brodie Castle was most illuminating. (The ladies now know the full meaning of the word “slap” when applying make-up!) Our route took us at just the right time of day to the somewhat evocative prehistoric cairns at Clava – had someone appeared in cave-man gear we wouldn’t have batted an eye. After the visit to Culloden Battlefield and the video show we were a little nervous of being the only Sassenachs at the dinner that evening, but we were indulged after revealing that we’d been about the only cars to complete the trip round the Black Isle to Cromarty as well! |
| Sunday took us to Dornoch – what a wonderful Cathedral – and then on a beautiful route up to Shin Falls and ultimately across to Ullapool. Even on Monday Fiona had arranged a route to Aviemore and, for those who could afford the time, a ride on the mountain railway and the prospect of further shopping at Bruar! |

I understand that £1000 was raised from the weekend to support CHAS which is a wonderful result. I’d like to thank the “old” Bears for being so welcoming to 4 new Bears. We look forward to joining you on many future occasions. Sandy Talbot |
