TR3A enjoys being in a Supercar Sandwich

 Home

After the problems we encountered last year, Pat and I were pleased to be part of a fantastic Supercar Sunday at the Heritage Motor Museum, Gaydon on 17 June.  Mick and the team of Bears members organised the ‘Dream Rides’ stand in the usual efficient manner, and I was just hoping that someone would choose to select a humble TR amongst the variety of cars in our enclosure.  The Ferraris and Aston Martins were very popular and yes - I did have 3 people interested in a ride in a 1959 Triumph TR3A and they were surprised when they found just how much quicker it is in modified form.

My passengers all had good reason to request a ride in the TR.  The first lady felt re-united with the car she owned 40 years ago; the second a man in his late 40s+ who had owned an Austin Healey 3000 but was currently restoring a Fiat 500.  Passenger 3 was a lad of approx 19 years and he was very keen on classic cars, having inherited his dad’s 1970 Mini and told me that he reckoned the TR was now quicker than 8 seconds 0-60 mph (next time I will ask Boo for my card to be changed to ‘N/A’!)

Back on the road with my first lady, we accelerated out of the gate up to the first roundabout and I was pleased to see that ahead of us was the racing Corvette Stingray - apparently one of only two in the world (the other being in a museum in America).  We followed through the 40 mph limit and onto the next roundabout.  By this time we had company, in the rearview mirror a silver Aston Martin Db9 had joined the small convoy.  Now, I am not the best navigator so I thought that if I tried to stick with the Stingray, all would be ok!

We all slowed for the next roundabout and followed the Stingray which indicated right.  I think we were all smiling for a moment as all three cars circulated twice before the Corvette turned off onto the ‘B’ road and accelerated hard up the hillclimb.  I was pleased with the TR’s response to maintain the gap and the Aston roared up behind.  That moment from 30 to 60+ was most memorable!

Thank you to the fellow Bears who just happened to make this a very special sandwich.
