The Cool Wall Concept |
Members are probably aware of the “Cool Wall” as featured on Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson and Co argue over how cool, or otherwise, particular cars are and their photo is placed on the board accordingly. My husband Mike took this basic idea, but suggested we invite members of the public to make a small donation (20p) to cast their vote. The cars would be those available for our dream rides at Thirlestane Castle. I would print off an extra copy of the information cards which incorporated a photo of the car along with its most relevant details. Beneath each would be an additional strip of cardboard onto which people would put their blue dot. It was amazing how many people actually first stuck the blue dot on themselves despite there being ones already stuck to the cards! At the end of the day the car with the most blue dots would be deemed the coolest. A fortnight before our Thirlestane event we took our club stand to the Scottish Motorfair at Knockhill. We had three cars for our static display and then there were the boards with the twenty five Dream Ride cars. We hoped that this would generate interest in the Dream Rides concept to supplement the flyers which we were handing out. It would also provide those manning the stand with a bit of fun whilst raising money for our chosen charity. |

Members of the public, particularly young boys, were very quick at identifying the most up-to-date cars, while those of more mature years appreciated the classic sports cars. It was interesting to note that a snap decision was not always made and disccusions would ensue as to the relevant merits of different models and makes. It transpired that the personal preferences of those issuing the blue dots often had a bearing on which cars were voted for! People were most generous - or don’t they know the difference between a 20 pence piece and a one pound coin? Over the two days we raised £230.00 which was a very good result indeed. The car with the most votes on Saturday was a Porche 911 Gt3 Clubsport, while Sunday’s winner was a Ferrari F430 Coupe. Interestingly, the concept did not prove nearly so successful when we tried it out at the actual event, possibly because the club stand was not on a main thoroughfare within the show ground. The members of the public tended to be older and perhaps not so conversant with the word “Cool”. It is however something others in the club might like to try out. There is an old saying “You pay your money and take your choice”. The prize for the coolest car would, of course, have to be a packet of Foxs Glacier Mints! Fiona Davies |
