Grand Opening Event
Proceeds to Sporting Bears
Rockingham Classics and Sports was created to give our customers a warm,
welcoming experience and to provide its owners (my wife Sheila and myself) a
rewarding life experience. This is probably the reason that we fell for the
Sporting Bears concept at the NEC last year and wanted to include this great
cause into the launch of our new business
Easter weekend was chosen to launch RC&S onto the unsuspecting public.
This weekend was deemed to be as close to the start of the season as possible,
whilst hopefully catching good Spring weather. Lady luck shone down on us
(hopefully a good omen) as both days were fine, particularly the Monday. Our
idea was to create an informal party style atmosphere over a two day period to
set the theme for our operation, whilst also aiming to raise £500 for the
Sporting Bears as a bit of fun.
Sunday 27th March - With the sun struggling to break through the mist, a
growing number of diehards, friends and Sporting Bears turned up, took refuge in
the warmth of the Coffee Shop and waited for the start of the auction at 2pm.
Generosity prevailed as furious bidding took place for items as varied as a
Honda C50 step-through gasket set (£12!?!) through to a Flying Lesson at the
Northampton School of Flying. Heckling was the order of the day and the sum
total was well over £700 - fantastic!
Monday 28th March - Much brighter weather tempted a number of very diverse
vehicles out for an airing such as; Rover P5, BMW Isetta bubble car,
Supercharged Porsche 911 Carrera 4, a newly restored Cadillac - all 19 feet of
it! and of course Nigel making the most noise in his TVR Griffith.
The treasure hunt competitors set off at a pace from midday, on a 30 mile
course estimated to take around 2 hours. The Porsche set off eighth and arrived
back first in a little over 1 ½ hours…-…time to light the barbeque. All in
all a great day, blessed with fantastic weather and a further £300 plus for the
Bears.
The whole weekend was a huge success for Rockingham Classics & Sports
being great fun and with the added bonus of doubling the target that we set for
the Sporting Bears Motor Club. Our conclusion was that we will definitely hold
another event in the Autumn, including the Sporting Bears of course!
Finally a big thank you to Nigel and Sheila Atkins for helping out on both
days and also to all you Bears out there that supported the event and became new
friends.
