The 3 Counties Caper

Home

Bob and Mary organised an excellent “Caper” …..and even members using a GPS (?) could not fault the 'Road Book' instructions.
The maximum entry of 18 cars enjoyed a weekend of fantastic scenery and some of the best roads in Britain for spirited driving ….and virtually traffic free! Sadly for us, the Triumph TR3A was not ready in time and we had to attend in an ordinary car.

I was pleased to see a couple of classic saloon cars on this event, i.e. the Triumph 2000 TC of Aleck and Rosemary. They are regular Bears tour entrants although Aleck admitted that his car probably should have had a tune up after the winter hibernation …..but 5 cylinders was generally enough and he was running on 6 for most of the time.

The James family are also tour regulars, here they were 4 up in the trusty Rover 100 …..and what a sight from our observation on Sunday morning. Picture the scene as we head up into the hills in convoy. We dip down and then ahead of us in the bright sunshine is a group of Bears cars heading up the next incline; the Rover rightly leading the pack with a variety of sports cars following. (For some reason I keep thinking of Tortoise and the Hair ……..although the Rover 100 really is a charging “tank”) The only problem they encountered was a thirsty radiator, hence topping up bottles from streams on the route.

This is the first tour for many years that Pat and I have not seen any TVR presence. This time Porsche dominated, with 3 examples all different.

What is the best part of any SBMC event ….it has to be the friendly camaraderie. It was great to meet old friends and new ….for a well deserved touring holiday …a social event before the fundraising year begins.

IF I could choose a car to drive home in (via a fast tour of Scotland), which would it be? The Porsche 911 Targa (993) of John and Lorna. Such style and purpose from the competition type leather seats, the leather (& wooden) steering wheel, all glass roof ….and it's in the club colour of SBMC yellow!
See you at the Vaynor Classic on 24 June …this time in the TR3A.

We would like to thank everyone who attended the 3 counties caper and made it the success that it most definitely was. Although it was mainly a social tour the amount raised was £212 which will go to the Mayfeild School, Whitehaven.

Watch this space for the next thrilling episode.
