SILVERSTONE
HISTORIC FESTIVAL
This years event celebrated 50 years of Formula One and what a great show it was. Many of the cars that had raced over the last 50 years were driven by their original drivers, a walk around the pits gave you the chance to see these great names from the past sitting in their race cars waiting to go out onto the track. Along with the classic F1 cars, there were races for 1950's Sports Cars, Aston Martin, Cooper, Lister jaguar, Lotus, Mazerati, Ferrari and many more. There were 11 races each day. Pre-war Sports cars from the 1930's up to 1960's Formula Junior racing. Sunday had a race with 31 1961 cars, amongst them 8 Mazerati 250F - to me the ultimate racing car.
This event is not only about classic racing and sports cars on the track, there is a huge display of hundreds of cars inside the track along with all sorts of things associated with old cars and motoring. One of the best parts of this event is the access everyone gets to all parts of the circuit , once you are in the gate you can go anywhere you want, there is no extra charge to enter the Pits, all grandstand seats are free so you can come and go as you please. This year, as in the past, the Sporting Bears had their own parking and display area. We were right behind the main grandstand and had a first class collection of classic and sports cars. I was very pleased with the response from the Bears as this year we had 79 members in our club area, many more than last year.
