POLAR NEWS No.34 Aug/Sept 2006
FROM YOUR EDITOR
Thanks to Caroline McSean for donating two very pretty bears (a Sporting and a Polar) to the Selkirk appeal - all the way from the BA Dream Rides, so we’ll make sure they get a good price! As a wee economy measure, we’ll be stretching the time between your Polar News when it’s quiet - so you’ll get this one (Aug/Sept) and then one for Sept/Oct or Oct/Nov depending on copy! Hint, hint and thanks to Jim and Alyson for an article. --- Helen
THE ADVENTURES OF YORKSHIRE PADDI !!!
“YP”goes Norge….
30th June –
6th July, The North Yorkshire quartet had decided to
venture off on another Touring holiday, this time to Norway, and what
an experience it turned out to be. After much deliberation, it was
decided that we would need reliable fast cars, so the Trevor was left
in the garage, and it was…

off on a MINI Adventure, sailing overnight from Newcastle, and
arriving next day in Bergen, all very civilised.
See you all soon.

KNOCKHILL
SCOTTISH CLASSIC SPEEDFAIR
The SBMC was asked if this would be a possible venue for Dream Rides next year. Polar Bears were invited to meet the event organiser, who proposed that Rides took place on the track as access to public roads is difficult during the event. However, while it seems a nice idea, a site visit on the day threw up some problems. It wouldn’t be possible to organise any road going Dream Rides, they would have to be round the track and there would only be a half hour slot for this. In addition, insurance for track runs with a passenger will be a problem - so the whole thing will need careful thought. We might want to consider attending next year in some capacity as the event has great potential.

COLDINGHAM GALA DAY
New Polars Jeff and Mary-Jane Ferris asked Tony if the Bears would do an awareness raising stand at the Coldingham Gala Day that they organise. So, on a glorious sunny July 30th, Tony and Iris, Fiona and Mike, and Helen and Brian set off for Coldingham where we set up the Bears stand next to the other classic cars and then had a wander round a nice, friendly village gala day with lots to do and plenty of punters. There were jumble and craft stalls, tombolas, lucky dips, kids entertainment, face painting, ceramic painting, archery, birds of prey, beer tent, bouncy castle, fair ground rides plus a good crop of interesting cars - see the bears sunbathing on Jeff’s replica GT 40 below.
We had permission to ‘rattle a bucket’ and raise funds for one of our charities and it seems that Sheila has some competition in this area! Fiona came out as the best bucket-rattler of the day - Mike and Brian weren't bad but Helen and Tony were hopeless! Luckily Fiona managed to chat effortlessly to all the members of the public and charm them into donating to the SBMC - with the result that we (well, she) collected £80 - which was excellent. Fiona also visited all the classic car owners to hand out membership forms and a bonus for all her efforts was her MGA collecting the third prize rosette for the classic cars! All in all, a good day out.
