POLAR NEWS OCTOBER 2006

WELCOME

We’d like to welcome new Polar Mike Webber from Hawick, who joined at Selkirk - hope to meet you and Helen soon.

BEARS' LUNCH

It was good to meet Nimal Jayaranta from Manchester in his lovely dark blue E-Type that he bought in Australia. Nimal had had a whip-round among colleagues at Manchester University and donated £25 to the SACHD fund - Sheila also sold him a large bear called Onslow!
Apart from the REACT presentation, see below, the main business was Tony Woods retiring as Polar Bears Rep and Fiona Davies agreeing to take over for the next three years. All the Polars would like to give Tony (and Iris!) a big "Thank You" for all his sterling work during the past three years and Tony would like to thank all Polar Bears for their help and support during that time. It was also decided that the money from Selkirk and recent raffles would go to SACHD - the Scottish Association for Children with Heart Disorders.

CELEBRATIONS

Karen Niven and Glenn Morris celebrated birthdays in October. We also received a photo of George and Sheila at their recent nuptials (below) with George's daughter.

REACT PRESENTATION

Left - Mo Grant from REACT receives the cheque from Thirlestane Dream Rides (made up to £1750 by the SBMC committee) at the recent Bears’ lunch at Auchen Castle. Just to remind you of the day at Thirlestane we have a photo (below) of a large happy bear off to his new home with Phil Roberts in his Morgan.

SELKIRK CLASSIC SHOW

Many thanks to George Dodds for sponsoring our stand at Selkirk where we had a sunny day and about 400 bears to sell - what could be better! Tony and Iris, Mike and Fiona, Helen and Brian (who are to be thanked for transporting the club stand), Keith and Ann, Bill and Karen, Brian S, George and Sheila, Philip and Sally, Archie, Marion and Jenny (best newcomers to bear-selling) plus Jeff and Mary-Jane were the Polar Bear contingent at Selkirk. The cars on the stand were the two Merc SLKs, two MGBs and a V8, an MR2, a replica GT 40, a Lotus, a TR6 and a very large Pontiac Bonneville. One bit of excitement was a MOP rushing onto the stand saying he recognised the TR6 of Brian S - who then learned a lot of facts about his car (one that it started off life as green) from this chap who was the second owner! Apart from that, the cars attracting the most attention were the Pontiac, Lotus and GT 40 and Mary-Jane had the presence of mind to offer seats and photo opportunities in the cars - for a suitable donation to the SACHD fund!

The most dedicated bear sellers and bucket rattlers were Fiona, Ann and Sheila (Fiona was heard to comment that the only time she had sat down was on the loo) and about 75% of the bears were sold - raising a good £700. Jeff and Mary-Jane also presented a cheque for £100 as the donation from the Coldingham Gala in July. Adding the money from other raffles and donations means SACHD will get a decent amount - so, well done everyone! Thanks also to those who collected all the bears. As a bonus, the Sporting Bears won the best club stand prize - a nice red rosette and a silver cup – which Tony and Archie received from Lord David Steel (above). All in all everyone had a good day.

CAR NEWS

Polar Bear Mike Rasmussen was surprised but pleased that his Little Healey won best in class for the Post-war cars at the Historic Wheels Club Rally at Brodie Castle in August.
Keith Davison has swapped his Z3 for a very tidy silver Mercedes SLK with the V6 engine and Jim Harris has got rid of his German Mini Cooper and replaced it with a real Mini Cooper (car 365?) and allegedly has also purchased car 366 - a BMW M3 coupe.
